Ok, after another wild and wonderful DID. And as I get ready to make the treck to Pennsic. I wanted to post (with Sheque's blessing) and ask for some feedback on what you the citizens what like to see on a few different issues. Every year it seems as though we tweak a few things that make running the event a little easier(meal plan, stage set-up, etc.) We are at the mercy of our resources and time with some of these things. But, on others we could always use feedback.
1.Classes: what other kind of workshops/classes would you might like to see? Again we are sort of at the mercy of who we can get to come out. Great teachers always seem to fall in our lap. What other types of classes would some of you like to see?
2.Other activites for those who may want to come but don't play music are dance. This seems to be a hold up for some because members of their family wan't to come but don't want to pay the price to particapte just to watch.
3. Anything else that might work within the event to make it better. Please keep in mind that this is Scott, Kay, Jeannie, Katie and Amber's home for the other 51 weekends of the year so some things like a swimming pool or turkish bath house would be great but may not be possible. The key is to try and spark intrest in the right people to help keep the event alive and well. Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

Re: Suggestions and help!
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 1:40 PMThese are some ideas I had for the non dance-non music people---
this is a working farm--- hardly anybody ever does this who lives in the cities-- have you thought of haveng them help with farm chores? I'm talking about easy ones (like feeding the goats and chickens and peacocks) and gathering eggs--just to hold a chicken is a cool thing if you have never done it before---or petting a goat--you could have them currying the horses---tractor driving lessons?
how about a fishing tournament? (some silly\cute\funny prizes for the ugliest fish, biggest, smallest)---
A nature hike through the woods?
Do we have any yoga teachers in the group that wouldn't mind leading a class?
we seem to have a lot of vegetarians in the group---- a discussion on how to make more vegetarian dishes taste good and get the nutrients that we need---(maybe with recipes passed around)
some SCA topics? how to get involved?---you will be coming back from pennsic-- anything there that we could use?
hope this helps----Susan -

Re: Suggestions and help!
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 1:48 PMI think these are great ideas Susan. I'd love it if there were a few structured kids activities like hikes and fishing. And I'm sure my son would love to help with farm chores.
Ill be leading daily yoga classes at next years DID.
cheers, Christy -

Re: Suggestions and help!
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 2:48 PMSince I'm hoping to come next year, and possibly with kids, it would be most excellant to have something like these things to keep them occupied and not whining at me in the middle of class about how bored they are. ROFL -

Tue, August 18, 2009 - 8:06 PMTodd----Even without structured activities my 6 year old son never got bored once! I've also found there are plenty of other parents willing to take turns keeping an eye on the kids.

Sat, August 22, 2009 - 4:34 PMI'm excited about the yoga classes! especially the day that we get there! I am always so sore and stiff after driving to DID----And after dancing and partying all night long---it's expecially great to stretch out the soreness and lactic acid buildup---

Re: Suggestions and help!
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 9:17 AMMerhaba, Chris, and thanks for getting this discussion started!
1) I sure wish there were some music instruction classes in davul / tapan, zurla / zurna / mizmar, kemence, and any other instrument that usually doesn't get covered. Of course, I realize that classes like this would depend not only on finding an accomplished and interested instructor but also on having enough spare davuls and zurlas and kemences, etc, to loan and to sell.
I could conceivably teach an Intro to Kaval class, but getting my hands on a half-dozen loaner kavals could be tricky ...
Also, as more and more Balkan-style music is being played on Darbukastan's main stage, it would be cool if we could have a simple folk dance class (paging Denys ...) and get a 50-person kolo or lesnoto going!
Lastly, I know that this might sound pretty nerdy to some, but I really enjoy lectures and slideshows about any aspect of Balkan, Middle Eastern and Central Asian history and culture ... It's the one aspect of SCA events that I am jealous of, the level of shared scholarship and academic discussion ...
Hell, I'd be psyched if there was a place where people could just show slides of their overseas travels ... I am THAT kind of weirdo that actually enjoys looking at other people's vacation photos, ha ha. Seriously, though, Shari and I have so many pics of amazing places in Bosnia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Turkey, and I'm sure that many other Darbukastanis have travelled the world and would love to share those travels, too.
2) is tricky for me ... While I sympathize with the friends, the significant others and the kids who come to DID who don't do any dancing or music-playing themselves, I'd kinda hate to see DID become too populated with even more non-musicians and non-dancers, ones who don't actually come with other dancers and musicians. What I mean to say is, one of the many amazing aspects of DID is that EVERYBODY is involved ... there are no hangers-on, no gawkers, no scene-sters, no people who are there just for the party or to be seen ... For that first weekend of June, there's no place on Earth with a higher concentration of such talent and artistry ... I'd hate to see it get watered down and become an unmanageably crowded party full of gawking strangers ... This has happened at a twice-yearly dance-and-music event here in Richmond that used to be pretty cool, but the dilution of serious artists with gawkers and partyers has degraded the event considerably, and now fewer and fewer serious musicians and dancers attend.
3) Somebody made the suggestion of having some construction weekends this autumn, some time that interested volunteers could come to help out with improving and rebuilding some of Darbukastan's infrastructure ... a more permanent stage, a pavillion, that kinida thing. I think this is a great idea, and y'all can definitely count Shari and myself in ...
Other than that, I think nailing down the food issue is still pretty important, and I know there are a lot of Darbukastanis with vast culinary experience who are interested in helping out with that. -

Thu, August 20, 2009 - 1:45 AMGeoff and all,
Thanks for the feedback. I like the idea of having a history of culture exchange session. I would like to see a into to language class too. Anything else. I will keep track of what is listed so far and maybe we can sort through later.

Thu, August 20, 2009 - 8:37 AMAh, yes, language could be cool, too ... Put me down for Serbian Swear Words 101 ... -

Re: Suggestions and help!
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 12:59 PMHeya, language would be great, too. Is there a common Romani dialect? I've always wanted to know what Esma Redsnepova was saying in her songs. ;-) -
-
Re: Suggestions and help!
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 1:58 PMEsma says she sings in 20 languages, but most of her recorded songs are in Macedonian. I've only heard her speak 2 words in English...begin! and super! -
-
Re: Suggestions and help!
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 7:57 PMI think several citizens are good candidates at language. I think the open forum on travels in different parts of the world is a great idea too. Would be cool to have a picture, stories, and suggestion share. Keep the ideas coming! -

Re: Suggestions and help!
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:20 PMHa ha, how about a Ms. Darbukastan beauty pageant? A Tour d'Darbukastan bicycle race? Official Darbukastani Olympic Peacock Mesmerizing team tryouts? An Independence Day parade? How about we invite the cultural attaches from various embassies up in DC and see if we can establish official trade relationships with their countries before one of them realizes that they can't seem to find Darbukastan in an atlas? I think it would be cool if Darbukastan signs AND ratifies the Kyoto Protocol before the US does ... We also need to address health care reform in our nation. I usually have Tylenol, vodka and Band-Aids in my tent ... this should put Darbukastan somewhere behind Slovenia but ahead of the USA in the list of national health care system quality levels ... -

Re: Suggestions and help!
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 1:27 PMOther than committing eco-politico-medical suicide, I like Geoff's ideas, especially the Ms. Darbukastan beauty pageant. The ladies of Darbukastan put Miss Venezuela to shame (both of them put together), and we could conceivably rob Hugo Chavez of another Chaveznistacal feather for his military cap.
