Denys,

Is it too early to start asking about the music for the ensenble this year? Any chance that we could perform Ikariotikos again? I plan on bring my bass guitar this year and Ikariotikos sounds really cool with arrangement that you taught last year.

is that the ancient egyptian piece? I LOVED that......or was that Donovan's Saz ensemble? I forget. Too much greatness numbs my memory.

I think that was the piece that Donovan and the Saz ensemble had performed. Ikariotikos is a traditional Greek melody. Denys had created an arrangment with both the treble and bass clef notation that sounds really nice together. Last year we only played the treble clef melody since there were no bass players in the music ensemble.

Hi Brian and Jessica, and other Lurkers,

Melissa asked me recently what I was going to teach at the ensemble this year. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'll tell you that I did prepare a lot of music for a different event I taught at recently, a sort of (hint) Tribal CONvention. It seems like there will be very little or no overlap between the musical participants of that event and DID, so I think I may use that same music. The bonus to you is that I have spent a lot of time to prepare a CD of musical samples, that I could mail to you early, and I made some sheets that I could mail to you early or post in a couple of formats. Those tunes would be Ketabim (also Uskadara Gedriken or From Athens for you Greeks), Sinanay, Ah Saba Ilen, and the return of Ceylenden.

If I am going to prepare a different batch of music that would be fresher to me, you wouldn't have the advantage of getting material early.

        --------

Yeah I remember liking that arrangement of Ikariotikos very much, and I was dissapointed that my base player friend didn't come. I should take a listen to that again.

        Later all,

        Denys

New music is always good and now I don't feel so bad about missing Tribal Con this year. Let me know what I need to do to have you send me the music ahead of time. I'll have to start working on a bass line to go with this new music.

          Hey Denys!

          Trade you sheet music. :-)

My list will be different from Denys'.

            Melissa,

Have you decided what you are going to teach at DID this year? It is great that we will have so many talented teachers this year. DID just keeps getting better and better each year. This year should be awsome.

I have a song list in mind that is different from Denys.

My class should be called something else, but I'm not sure what yet. Denys and I are both teaching songs, but different ones. I want to learn Denys' songs, too!

I will have sheet music in standard notation as well as guitar and bass tabulature for my songs.

You can get my sheet music online at www.dorku.com The tabulature is on its way....

                Melissa,

Have you decided which melody or melodies you plan to teach at DID this year?
                • Melissa's class....

I am also taking requests. But you have to pick from the songs on www.dorku.com. Those are the songs I know.

Here is a list so far. I'm only teaching one class session for melody. My other class is how to Kick Start Your Zurna.

Nihavent Oyun Havasi (in D Nihavent with a fast chiftitelli rhythm)
Sulukule (in D Hicaz with karsilama rhythm)
Siseler (in a bastardized G Ussak with malfuf and ayoob rhythms)
Mevlana (D Hicazkar with slow chiftitelli)

                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Also add Rumeli Karsilamasi to the list.

In A Kurd using the karsilama rhythm.
