Ok, after another wild and wonderful DID. And as I get ready to make the treck to Pennsic. I wanted to post (with Sheque's blessing) and ask for some feedback on what you the citizens what like to see on a few different issues. Every year it seems as though we tweak a few things that make running the event a little easier(meal plan, stage set-up, etc.) We are at the mercy of our resources and time with some of these things. But, on others we could always use feedback.

1.Classes: what other kind of workshops/classes would you might like to see? Again we are sort of at the mercy of who we can get to come out. Great teachers always seem to fall in our lap. What other types of classes would some of you like to see?

2.Other activites for those who may want to come but don't play music are dance. This seems to be a hold up for some because members of their family wan't to come but don't want to pay the price to particapte just to watch.

3. Anything else that might work within the event to make it better. Please keep in mind that this is Scott, Kay, Jeannie, Katie and Amber's home for the other 51 weekends of the year so some things like a swimming pool or turkish bath house would be great but may not be possible. The key is to try and spark intrest in the right people to help keep the event alive and well. Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

We trust that this note finds all well and enjoying Spring. Sure wish all of you could be here with us as Spirithaven wakes up. Kay and I ran into an amazing deal on bulbs which worked out to costing somewhere just under a penny apeice so we bought and planted 8000 daffodils, tulips and crocus this past winter and they are coming up now.
Plans are coming together nicely for DID 2009 and we have had the good news that Chris Washburn will once again do the meal plan for us. This year the meal plan is included in the registration fee of $175.00 pre-reg.. Speaking of which, Pre-reg ends 4/1/09 so please avoid a higher payment by registering this week!
We are pleased to be able to offer each registrant the excellent quality plan Chris treated us to last year. With Vegetarian and Omnivore selections this plan worked extremely well for us last year. With all registrants receiving the eight meals it will save them time and The Darbukastani Treasury money as we will get a better rate for an increased participation. This also makes it more convenient to the Citizenry as you will not have to bring as much in the way of supplies.
May I ask the instructors to make sure you have sent us a class description as we would like to post the tentative schedule early next week. Thank You.

Please feel welcome to e-mail any requests/questions to us at your convenience. We are looking forward to having you all with us again this year!

Since last fall I have been working with two classes of fourth graders: one is located in Columbia MD and the other is in the Central Arava region of south-central Israel. They have been collaborating together as part of a story-creating, storyboarding and storytelling project that builds on descriptive & narrative writing exercises that targets their visual interpretation skills. Just another way of integrating the arts to teach core classroom curriculum.

No trip would be complete without a heavy dose of drumming. I'm taking one drum: a 20" Cooperman bodhran. So as not to miss out on an opportunity I am planning on taking a hand held Digital Recorder. The one that I am looking at is the M-Audio Micro Track II Portable Digital Recorder.

I'm looking for things in my life to simplify as part of my New Year's resolution. Lately I've been unable to go to DID, and I'm out of touch with the goings-on, and I've been trying to limit my time on tribe, but I don't want to abandon my moderator duties here for Darbukastan.
I would like to pass on the title of moderator to a fellow citizen.

In addition to the usual role of moderator, this tribe's moderator needs to have a little extra somethin' somethin'.
- Able to communicate or receive communication from our beloved Minister, Sheque, and post it here.
- Update citizens on tribe about any web site changes, event info, or registration news.
- Inform and welcome new citizens about what to expect at DID, answer FAQ's, and so forth.
- I also usually receive emails about "can I teach a workshop at DID", "where can I camp", or "can I perform at the hafla". Tribe moderator is a misleading title, people assume it means I organize this event. As moderator, you'll need to point these people in the right direction.

Would anyone like to nominate someone (or themselves) to be the moderator?

I figured this would be the best place to start rather than posting to the masses.
Wine and Alchemy is doing a concert with Ishtar Friday Aug 1 at Pennsic and we (W&A) are looking for a couple dancers who would like to perform with us in the set.

I (Roxanne) will be dancing on a few of the tunes, but as I'm also singing on several, and since variety is the spice of life...

Anyone with the interest?
I know some of you got a taste of our music both Saturday night and while we were rehearsing Sunday.
There's more on the website and myspace - posted in a previous thread.

Please feel free to message me if you think you might like to, or if you want to suggest someone who is yet unbeknownst to us. :-)
Much love to all!

One thing DID could perhaps use to keep itself afloat by way of PR, is an 'official' 3-5 minute youtube video - a slice 'o life of DID.
TribalCon in Atlanta has one, and we have one for my camp, TribO, (youtube it under Triboriginal Promotional Video) and I think it is a great marketing tool that conveys far more than a static media ad, is a great way to SHOW friends rather than just tell them why they should come next year.

And, with the magic of editing, the Muses of Spirithaven can totally control what that public perception IS!

Hi everyone,

With much joy and glee, I am returning to D.I.D. this year to the Canadian Embassy (the delapitated trailer that I have grown to love).

It came to my attention that Ted Monnich will not attend this year. That's quite unfortunate and I can't stand stand the thought of all us saz-folk hanging. I offered Scott to head a saz group so at least there's some saziness for the halfa. As some of you know, I took formal lessons on saz repertoire at University this year from Professor Irene Markoff. I believe I can take some of what I know and at least put a group together and keep us engaged and evolving. I typically stay away from doing the saz-group because I like Ted to lead the way. Under the circumstances, I've been to busy to prepare a lecture on ancient music this year, but I've had plenty of time to prepare a sazy hell of time.

One of the challenges is finding out who is coming this year - are any of you on Tribe coming? If so, what is your playing ability? I can go beginner or better yet, Intermediate. It's hard to gauge who's who. Many of you are hardcore long neck players but I play some hardcore short neck. Nonetheless, it's easy to tune a long neck to short - just stretch your fingers before you play! ;-) I play with a "bam" string, which Bill inspired me to try. I'll never go back. It's so sexy (like a bouzouki - ouch!)

So let me know which sazy people attending. Would it help if pre-posted PDF's of the music we could do?
We are pleased to announce that we are going through the final bits of recording and editing before we send our tracks off to be mastered and mass-produced! Hopefully we will have the LP ready to sell sometime in April.

We are very grateful to those of you who have prepaid the LP for being so patient with us. We really tried to get this thing finished this winter, and we apologize that this didn't happen--we want to provide you with the best possible recordings, so instead of rushing the album out we decided to postpone it.
That being said, we are VERY pleased with the results so far and will be delivering to you a professional product.

Once we release the album we will be putting together a CD release party and will be available for touring around later this year.
If you are putting together a bellydance workshop weekend somewhere and want a great live band drop us a line!!!

Another bulletin will be sent out the day we send the tracks out with a more precice release date!
Thank you for all of your amazing support and wonderful compliments.
We couldn't do this without such amazing fans and audience!

I need your help a bit. My dentist is alarmed at some white patches on my tongue and inner cheek. The ones on my tongue have been there for months, do not hurt, and do not change. The one on my cheek is active and exists as a sore. I'm concerned I may have initiated this by swallowing fire at D.I.D. this June. Does anyone know who these guys were? I want to ask them some questions (like do they have the same things inside their mouths?). If anyone know an e-mail or tribe link to their profile please help me out.

We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

I'm passing along an email that I received from our gracious host and Minister, Scott/Sheque:

Greetings from Spirithaven Farm!

We trust all of you, our friends and fellow Citizens of Darbukastan, are well and seriously into Spring. All is greening up nicely here in "The Capitol" and recovering after our recent wind storms. We were without power for a few days but did well with our woodstoves and spring water. I must apologize to you all for the less than satisfactory reporting about the festival on my part. Several issues including the power issue, a nasty virus I downloaded which kept us incommunicado for two weeks plus house-building, college shopping and Lady Cougars Soccer (Katie and Amber are on the Varsity team at Patrick County High) have put a serious crimp in my updating. I am sorry for this. I have heard from Chris Owens that some folks have been trying to register for the event and have not gotten a reply from us. Katie or I have sent replies to all folks who registered by e-mail (that we know of). I can only assume that the worm/virus may have affected us more than I realized. If you feel we need to communicate directly, please try to e-mail and if you do not receive a reply in two days, feel free to phone us at home at 276-694-5810.
Now, a bit of sad news, donovan and Daveed will not be able to be with us this year for reasons related to that four-letter word that most of us have to deal with five or more days per week. Daveed is taking Baltimore by storm and has a new job that will take him in a direction he has been pursuing for some time. Obviously we can not replace Daveed but we are working on three most excellent instructors (recommended by Daveed himself) to take over his classes. This may be a blessing in disguise as, if you old-timers will remember, we got Brother Billy Woods to DID several years ago to fill-in for Daveed and he has becaome a much-loved fixture at the event. I look at this as a way to expand on our faculty without losing anyone as we all know Daveed will be back. As this change is very recent (as in this morning!) I am not ready to announce who will be added to the faculty until "the ink is dry", so to speak. Suffice it to say that we will be well-staffed in the "musical area" of the festival. Carla and Ted Monnich will be coming to DID directly from Istanbul (we had to extend the runway of Darbukastani International airport by 12 feet to handle the aircraft) and Carla has graciously offered to lead the Guedra once again. I have a feeling that she will be bringing some special Turkce energy with her as the Monnichs will be in Istanbul and Ankara for one month prior to joining us.
If any of you have registered but not sent your tuition checks, please do that for us as soon as you can. We need to confirm your space. We do have several spaces remaining but historically get "busy" with last-minute registrations in May.
We have a new caterer for this year's event. Ambra Lionstone of Ambrosia's Delights and Pangea's Spice Cafe will be providing us will delicious fare for the weekend. She will serve brunch and supper Friday and Saturday and Brunch on Sunday. Ambra will also offer late-night snacks as have been availble in the Halic Taverna in the past. Ambra and her fare come highly recommended by Sister Onca (did you know she joined the convent? Can you picture that? What a Sister! There would be "nun" better!). Sorry, I just had to. Kay and Mama Jeanne will offer the Spirithaven "Continental" breakfast as in the past with excellent coffees and teas from The Honduras Coffee Company in Stuart with fresh-baked muffins and pastries, yoghurt, fruit, juices and Bagels on an ala carte basis each morning. I have provided you with a sample menu for Pangea's Spice Cafe below.

Pangea's Spice Cafe
Asian-style

Magic miso stew
Crisp green salad with raw ginger dressing
Vermicelli rice noodles with scallions, shitake mushrooms, peas and
ginger-miso sauce
Chinese barbeque baked tofu
Since we only have an hour to address muscles, bones, and joints as they relate to the physical mechanics and anatomy of belly dance, what types of things would you most like to walk away with at the end of that class?

I could teach at least a whole semester on this. However, I need to streamline it to the most important points I can cover in that short time frame. Any feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated. What would you want to learn?

I do not coordinate or plan this event, the man in charge is Sheque, also known as Scott. He doesn't really like to surf on Tribe, so that is why you will very rarely have a Sheque sighting here on tribe.
I have taken it upon myself to start a group here to help promote DID and keep our Spirithaven family in touch. Attending this event will connect you with some of the coolest and greatest people, so this is our online home where we can keep in touch between events, share pictures, feedback, plan sharing rides and ask general questions about the event and so on. If you have general questions or want to say hi, by all means, start a topic and introduce yourself!

Nevertheless I am pleased to inform you that we have another DID experience for you all, the dates of which are June 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2007. Our current minister of Information and high-pitched hand-percussion, Carla Monnich, has graciously volunteered to get a new posting on the website and I will be sending updates to her with some regularity.
The particulars regarding registration and fees have not changed this year but may have to be adjusted next year. The tuition is $100.00 for registrations received by March 1st 2007 and are once again $125.00 for those coming in after that date. If you can register early it will be good for all of us as we are expecting a good response from the article that Kristie was kind enough to write for us that appeared in Zaghreet magazine. We are limited to 100 participants as usual. We have some great faculty and entertainment scheduled for you and can promise one thing at this point. Turku will be with us once again in full-force! Please keep an eye on the website for updates and expect a few surprises!
If anyone wishes to post this notice to Tribe, I'd appreciate it. We changed computers and updated our lists and did not receive responses from some of our original Citizens. I do not want to leave anyone out of the loop. Any community involvement is welcomed. If you wish to regsiter and the new form is not posted on www.touchtheearth.com , feel free to use the old one.
Thanks to you all for your friendship to us and support of this event!

With Warmest Regards,

Sheque/Scott

I originally wanted to keep the members as those who attended or planned to attend the events, so that we could all keep in touch and plan as a group.
Due to receiving many requests to post information or to join the tribe, I've decided that it is best for anyone to join and see what we are about. I want to help promote this event for Scott and Kay, and having a moderated tribe doesn't really help get the word out.

My only request.........

New members, please introduce yourselves! Say hello and where you're from........we're a friendly crowd and in the spirit of Spirithaven, we like to consider ourselves family.
Welcome and many peacock blessings be upon you-
